Oyster Card - The Cheapest Way To Get Around London
Oyster is the cheapest way to pay for single journeys on Tubes, buses, DLR and trams in london.
Having and using an Oyster card is a smart idea. It will save you time because you will not have to stand in the queues for tickets as you can pay in advance. Oyster will always automatically calculate the cheapest fare for the journeys you make in a single day. It is also easier to use - your Oyster card is reusable - just top it up with cash or renew your Travelcard/Bus Pass when needed. You can store your Travelcard/Bus Pass and/or cash to pay as you go on your card.
Most importantly, Oyster single fares are always cheaper than cash. Fore example, Tube/DLR (Zone 1 travel) cash single fare is 4, while Oyster Pay As You Go single fare is 1.50. Bus/tram (all zones) cash single fare is 2, while Oyster Pay As You Go single fare is 1.
You can get an Oyster card: online at http://tfl.gov.uk/oyster, at most Tube station ticket Offices, at over 2,200 Oyster ticket Stops across london, at some National Rail ticket offices, at eight london travel Information Centres, by phone on 0845 330 9876. When you first get your Oyster card, you will need to pay a refundable 3 deposit if you are only adding cash to pay as you go. At the same places you can renew and top-up your Oyster card.
Pay as you go means that you can store cash on your card to pay for single journeys as you go or to cover the cost of any journeys you make outside the validity of your Travelcard/Bus Pass. If you pay as you go the system will look at your journeys in a 24-hour period and the amount you pay will be capped, so it will always cost you less than the price of an equivalent Day Travelcard or One Day Bus Pass.
If youre not using your Oyster card and you only use it to pay as you go, you can lend it to someone else.
With Auto top-up, your Oyster card pay as you go balance can be topped up automatically with either 20 or 40, whenever your balance drops below 5.
You can store 7-day, monthly or longer period Travelcards and Bus Passes on your Oyster card.
You can also store tickets and cash on a single Oyster card for those unexpected journeys outside the validity of your Travelcard/Bus Pass.
Now, how do you use your Oyster card? It is very simple, but you have to follow certain rules. To ensure you pay the correct fare, when traveling by Tube, DLR and valid National Rail services, you must always touch in on the yellow reader at the start of your journey and touch out at the end of your journey. Failure to do this may result in you paying a maximum cash fare (penalty). The card is used a bit different when riding a bus or tram - you must touch in at the start of your journey but not at the end. You have to check for the green light when you touch in or out to ensure your Oyster card has been validated. Failure to touch in and/or touch out correctly may result in a penalty fare or you being prosecuted.
